Pelzer Mill Revitalization

An EPA Assessment Grant has been awarded for the upper and lower mill sites which include over 70-acres on the Saluda River. The original lower main mill brick and hardwood was recycled by the Memphis Brick Company and two usable warehouses still exist on-site.  Gerber Childrenswear, Inc. is continuously monitoring the groundwater testing.

The land has around 1,620 feet of river front property that FOP is trying to have donated to be developed as a park. FOP plans to renovate the old mill office into a community center for local youth and community dinners. FOP is in communication with local church groups who have shown interest in participating in the community center.

There is a small, historic hydroelectric station adjacent to the property that could supply inexpensive, clean energy for the site. The plan is to cultivate the property into a zero carbon footprint development supplied by solar and hydra power with adequate green space and trails on the river.

The upper mill has a 16-acre plot for a residential development and about 22-acres of river front property for additional parklands and more potential residences.

100 Courtney Street Renovation

Friends of Pelzer has just completed on July 15th, 2012 saving the original, historic cafe located at 100 Courtney Street and Highway 8. This is a prime central location in Pelzer and the building was in need of refurbishing. FOP renovated the building and will obtain a 10-year lease from the Town of Pelzer. The renovations cost will be recouped back to FOP in ways of subleasing the building to a viable business. This will benefit the town by restoring one of its historic buildings and bringing needed new business and employment to the town while providing FOP with resources to further it’s vision.

Pelzer Recreation Park

The Pelzer Recreation Park is a long-term project that will re-use and rejuvenate the 92-acre sewage lagoon as a vital parks and recreation facility. The vision is to have multi-use fields for football & soccer, softball/baseball fields, hiking trails and kayak loading areas into the Saluda River.
